HOW COLORS ON WOVEN TOWELS WORK

Custom woven towels are the finest towels available today.  They are the only towels that offer you logo directly woven into the towel as the towel is made with yarn dyed threads.  Nevertheless, due to the nature of how jacquard looms work there are restrictions not in the number of colors, but in how those colors are laid out on the towel.  Below you will find an example of a 2 and 3 color towel as the loom sees it.  Please read the descriptions carefully to understand what can and cannot be done with artwork

2 COLOR TOWEL
Results in finest quality towel

The towel to the right is an example of a 2 color towel from the looms perspective. Even though there are 4 colors in this towel (green, red, white and black) the loom treats this as a 2 color towel. The reason for this is illustrated by the yellow arrows going through the towel. If you follow the arrow down it never intersects more than 2 colors from top to bottom. The towel is made up of hundreds of parallel lines (called pick lines) that are created by the looming process. As long as no more than 2 colors are present on any pick line then the best quality towel will result. On the towel shown one pick line might have green and white present and the next one which is about 1/32nd of an inch away could be green and red. This is no problem as long as from top to bottom only 2 colors are present. Below illustrates the difference when going to a 3 color towel.

Still good quality but "grinning" is present

As compared to the towel above the example at right represents a 3 color towel from the looms perspective. This towel, while still good quality exhibits a striping effect called "grinning" which results from the 3rd color being present in the pick line. If you once again follow the yellow arrows down the towel you will see that on some of the arrows they intersect red, gray and black. Even though this occurs in only a small section of the towel the entire towel will "grin". This "grin" or gap is created by the extra space taken up by the stitches. In the example above the towel only had two colors in the pick line. If one color was up then the other color was down (the back side of all woven towels will have the opposite color sequence than the front) and the towel continued to be woven. When a third color is needed on a pick line all three colors need to be present at all times for the loom to use them. Therefore when one color goes up 2 colors go down. The extra space taken up by the 2 stitches that go down cause the front face of the towel to have a striped effect which is called "grinning".
